Borough Market

As an addendum to local markets, I am in love with London’s Borough Market! Arriving at the market was a complete accident: I got off the tube stop, followed an amazing aroma in the air, went down some sketchy stairs, and low and behold, Borough Market right in front of me! Fresh breads and jams, unforgettable cherry plum tomatoes roasted over oak wood for eight hours, aged cheeses, mushroom pates, wines, but most importantly, SAMPLES SAMPLES SAMPLES.

I was more preoccupied with tasting things at the market, but here are some photos when I was able to get my hands off the food.

A huge vat of seafood paella!

These cheeses smelled incredible! One was even aged for 20 years!

I barely browsed through the market once, so I will definitely return. More pictures to come!

Popover Sundaes

twodadscook:

Sure: popovers make for an easy, go-to weekend breakfast, especially when we have guests. There’s little skill required — always a good thing when we’re all a little bleary-eyed — and draw upon ingredients we always have on hand. Smeared with salted butter, jam or maple syrup, they make for a great start to the day. But they’re equally delicious at the end of a weeknight supper, especially when paired with all the makings of a traditional ice cream sundae.

Local London Food Markets

Cuisine in London is very similar to home: you have the Chinatowns, the burger joints (fish and chips here), and cultural hubs. Unfortunately, I have not found anything too uniquely stunning or spectacular yet. At times, I find that there is more food authenticity at home, but I suppose California is an exception. Though, if there is one main food difference I have noticed so far between the States and London, it is the appreciation for fresh/local produce and artisan food. Fruits and vegetables do not look like they are on steroids even at the large grocery chains. Bakeries and delis with fresh bread and cheeses dot the map of the city. And when I discovered the London food market scene, it was impressive, astounding, and obviously, delicious.

I live in South Kensington across from the Natural History Museum, and I came across the South Kensington Farmer’s Market on Bute Street. They are there every Saturday from 9am-2pm.

There were meats…

Pot Roasted Chicken

and fresh pastries…

and sausages…

and even pate!

Of course there were booths with produce as well. Although these markets do not compare in size or scale to Borough Market, I love the small local feel and the great convenience. The South Kensington Farmer’s Market is only one out of the long list that take place on the weekend, so definitely worth checking out!
